Recommendations for Hosts
Obtain and display a Working with Children Check, it increases student’s confidence in you and might make your homestay more attractive than the competition.
If you have a current Police Check display that too.
Ensure your home insurance policy has adequate public liability cover.
Less is more – furnish a room simply, with a made bed, desk & chair, lamp, some hanging space and some folded clothes space. Don’t forget to get a set of keys cut for each guest room!
Consider adding a safety power board if there aren’t many power points.
Don’t be reserved about fully disclosing all people and pets occupying your home, every guest is looking for something different.
Clearly communicate inclusions, such as meals and assistance you are prepared to offer. Assisting students with maps and information on the CBD and public transport, obtaining a Prepaid SIM or post paid mobile phone, opening an Australian bank account, and demonstrating supermarket transactions and processes, can be of great value to guests.
Request payment a ‘reasonable’ amount of time, prior to commencement of the homestay, to encourage the booking to be honored.
